Soft Rava Upma

It was always difficult to make my Rava Upma soft. Either they crumbled or turned out to be a porridge. It was quite embarrassing to tell someone I cant make Upma. After many failures, finally Upma showed mercy on me. Once I got the trick thought I would share this in my blog. Might give some help for someone out there!! :)

Ingredients :

  1. Roasted Rava or Semolina : 1 cup
  2. Onion : 1 , sliced thinly
  3. Urad Dal : 1 tsp
  4. Red chillies : 2 , halved and splitted
  5. Chana dal : 1 tbsp
  6. Carrot : 2-3 tbsp, finely chopped
  7. Ginger : 1 tsp ; chopped finely (optional)
  8. Asafoetida : 1/4 tsp
  9. Grated Coconut : 2-3 tbsp

Method :
  1. Roast semolina if it is not . Meanwhile, keep sufficient amount of water to boil.
  2. When rava is roasted, add ghee in a wok and when it gets heated add mustard seeds
  3. When seeds splutter, add curry leaves, chana dal, urad dal .
  4. Add onion and when it gets transparent, add red chillies and carrot.Add Asafoetida and ginger together. After this add rava and mix completely. Add salt at this point. Its not possible to put salt after rava is cooked.
  5. Following this, add water and cover the lid to cook in low flame for about 6-7 min.
  6. When done, switch off flame and add lemon juice and coconut.
  7. Mix well & serve hot

Note :

  • If you want to get soft upma, you must use the correct quantity of water.  For 1 cup rava, use nearly 2 cup of water.
  • Semolina should be roasted  to get soft upma.
