Date Fritters

Dates-fritters

Ramzan is on the way and yes all muslims are preparing for this auspicious month. Most people doesnt know what is Ramzan. They get confused with Eid. Ramzan is one of the Holy month of Islamic calendar which has alot of historic importance. Due to its importance muslims are told to fast the whole month which is finished with a celebration of Eid. During Ramzan, each fast is started before dawn i.e Subah azan . Me, being a Muslim usually have something heavy to fill our stomach. And after that no solid and liquid eatables are allowed. Not even water. But trust me, we dont feel hungry. We spend the days in worshiping Allah, doing good deeds and avoiding sins. By following Ramzan's rules, a muslim will try to learn and bring a habit of avoiding sins and doing good deeds, which he might try to follow in the remaining months. Thus making a good muslim. Thats the aim of Ramdan. And then by evening or dusk, when the azan ie Magrib azan breaks out, fasting period ends. Fasting is broken in the form of dates or water if former is unavailable. Followed is a bunch of fruits and  spicy or non spicy homemade snacks. After a short break , we have dinner mainly non veg curry and rice Pathiri. In between we do namaz or prayer also . And then after dinner again we do namaz which is called Tharaveeh which is a very lengthy one. Then after that night's sleep, again we wake up to start our next day's fasting. After this 29-30 days of fasting we celebrate Eid with lots of spirit and enthusiasm with our family, relatives and friends.
Ah! That was a lengthy post . Today I am posting an Ifthar or Ramzan snack using Dates. Its courtesy goes definitely to my mom. No need to wait for Ramzan , anyone can prepare this at any evening.

Ingredients :

  1. Pitted plumpy Dates : 15- 20
  2. Cashewnuts or Almonds or any desired nuts : 15-20
  3. All Purpose flour : 1 cup
  4. Water : As required to make batter.
  5. Salt : to taste
  6. Oil : 1 cup for deep frying

Method :

  1. Make a batter using all purpose flour, salt and water which has the consistency of normal Pazham Pori.
  2. Remove the seeds of all dates and place one nut instead. In the meantime heat oil in a kadai for deep frying.
  3. When the oil is hot ready for frying, dip each prepared dates into the batter and deep fry. Wait until it turns light brown on all sides. Take them into a tissue paper to drain the oil.
  4. Why wait ? serve! hehe..
